Last February we sat in a Wilpattu jeep for two hours and saw nothing but a mongoose. Then, just after nine, a leopard walked out of the scrub, crossed twenty metres in front of us, and vanished. Nobody spoke for a full minute.
That minute is the whole point of a wildlife trip. It is what we build our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages around: patience, the right parks, and drivers who know where to wait.
Our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages are private by default. Your own car, your own driver-guide, your own jeep inside the park, and park fees paid in your name rather than hidden inside a mystery price.
Everything below comes from our own operations. You will find 2026 park fees and jeep rates, month-by-month guidance for every major reserve, three itinerary templates, and the wildlife ethics we will not compromise on.

Sri Lanka Wildlife Tour Packages — The Honest Safari Guide

Here is the short version. Every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages itinerary we build is a private, day-by-day journey. You get a driver-guide who works for us all year, hotels we have inspected, and safaris in a private jeep with a licensed park driver. You choose the parks and the pace, and we handle the tickets, the permits and the driving.
We work across the whole island, from Wilpattu in the north-west to Kumana in the east, so no route we sell comes from a template bought this morning. Every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages itinerary starts with your dates and your interests. Our jeep drivers in Tissamaharama and Habarana are men we have worked with for years, which matters more than any vehicle upgrade.
Most operators sell the same two-night Yala add-on with the same three hotels, then call it wildlife touring. Our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages start from two different questions instead. How many hours a day do you want in a vehicle, and which animals would you regret missing?
One promise matters more than the rest. We do not sell elephant riding, and we do not sell visits to orphanages that keep elephants for photographs. If a wildlife experience needs an animal to perform for you, it is not inside our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages.
Every element of our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages is confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit, including the exact hotel, room category and safari timings. Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife Conservation sets the park rules and closures we work around, and we check them before every single departure.
Why Sri Lanka Is One of the World’s Best Wildlife Destinations
Sri Lanka covers 65,610 square kilometres, roughly the size of Ireland, yet it holds more than 20 national parks and a startling concentration of large animals. Yala National Park carries one of the highest leopard densities on earth, and the subspecies you see there, Panthera pardus kotiya, exists nowhere else in the world.
The numbers keep improving. You can watch a blue whale surface in the morning and photograph wild elephants the following afternoon, because both live within one day’s drive of each other. Add sloth bears, crocodiles, leopards and the largest seasonal gathering of Asian elephants anywhere, and the island becomes hard to beat for the money. That is why our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages barely leave this one small island.
Two UNESCO World Heritage listings confirm the ecological weight of the island’s wild places: the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands. Sri Lanka’s tourism authority promotes the island on exactly this breadth, with beaches, culture and big animals packed inside a one-week radius.
The real advantage of Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages is scale. A three-hour drive takes you from tea estates at 1,800 metres to dry-zone thorn scrub where leopards hunt. In most countries that would be a flight and a wasted day. Here, it is simply the afternoon.
We have planned Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages for honeymooners, families with toddlers and retired photographers, and the island absorbs all of them. Nobody has ever told us the island was too small.
Best National Parks in Sri Lanka for Wildlife — Ranked by What You Will Actually See
Choosing parks is the biggest decision in any Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages itinerary, and it matters more than your hotel. The table below covers the reserves we actually drive guests through, with 2026 foreign adult entry fees and an honest verdict on crowds.
| Park | Area | Signature wildlife | Best months | Entry (foreign adult) | Crowds | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yala (Block 1) | 979 km² | Leopard, sloth bear, elephant | February–July | ~$25 base, ~$45 all-in | Very busy | Still the best leopard odds |
| Udawalawe | 308 km² | Elephants year-round | December–May | ~$15 base | Moderate | Best first safari for families |
| Minneriya | 89 km² | Elephant Gathering, 300+ animals | July–October | ~$25 | Moderate to busy | Go in August or September |
| Kaudulla | 69 km² | Elephant herds | August–October | ~$25 | Moderate | Where the herds move next |
| Wilpattu | 1,317 km² | Leopard, sloth bear, deer | February–September | ~$15–25 | Quiet | Our favourite for privacy |
| Bundala | 37 km² | Flamingos, migratory waders | November–March | ~$12 | Quiet | Birders only, and worth it |
| Kumana | 357 km² | Birding, turtles, elephant | April–September | ~$25 | Quiet | A strong east-coast add-on |
| Sinharaja | 89 km² | Endemic rainforest birds | December–April | ~$15 | Moderate | Rainforest walk, not a safari |
Yala National Park — The Leopard Capital
Yala’s Block 1 is the most reliable place on the island to see a leopard, and the least private. Between December and March, thirty jeeps can sit at the same sighting, which is exactly why we push guests towards Block 5 or a full-day permit instead.
Timing matters in 2026. The Department of Wildlife Conservation closed Blocks 1 and 2 from 14 September to 15 October because of severe drought. Blocks 3, 5 and 6 stayed open, and our September guests switched to Block 5 and Lunugamvehera. Budget for that pattern if you travel in late September or early October.
Tracks are sandy, dawn light is superb, and Patanangala Beach gives you a coastline most parks cannot match. Block 4 is a strict nature reserve and off-limits to visitors entirely. Our Yala safari tour package explains the half-day and full-day structures we run.
Udawalawe National Park — Elephants All Year
Udawalawe is open grassland, open water and several hundred elephants, which makes it the most dependable elephant safari in the country. Sightings do not depend on season, and the park never closes.
It is also the easiest park for children. Drives from the gate are short, elephants appear within twenty minutes, and the Elephant Transit Home sits next door. More on that below.
Minneriya and Kaudulla — The Elephant Gathering
Between July and October, hundreds of elephants converge on the shrinking Minneriya reservoir. It is the largest gathering of Asian elephants anywhere on earth, and it happens twenty minutes from Sigiriya.
When Minneriya’s water drops, the herds shift across to Kaudulla. Our drivers check daily which park is holding the herds, because a booked Minneriya safari in the wrong week means two elephants and a lot of dust.
Wilpattu National Park — Sri Lanka’s Quiet Giant
Wilpattu is the largest park in the country and the emptiest of the good ones. Its villus, shallow sand-rimmed lakes, draw leopards and sloth bears, and on a full-day drive in March we often see two other jeeps all day.
Distances inside the park are long and the tracks are rough, so every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages day here should be a full one. Most guests enter from Hunuwilagama near Anuradhapura, either before or after the Cultural Triangle.
Bundala and Kumana — For Birders and Migrants
Bundala sits near Tissamaharama on the south coast and is a Ramsar wetland famous for flamingos and migratory waders between November and March. Its entry fee is the cheapest of the majors and the crowds are minimal.
Kumana, near Arugam Bay, is the east-coast equivalent: quiet, bird-rich and best from April to September. Both work as add-ons rather than headline parks.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve — Endemic Birds in the Rainforest
Sinharaja is a UNESCO-listed rainforest and the best place in Sri Lanka to see endemics such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl and the red-faced malkoha. A DWC tracker is compulsory, and the fee includes one for your group.
Expect mud, humidity and leeches after rain, plus a slow five-kilometre walk rather than a game drive. Bring leech socks if you own them. If you do not, salt works and your guide will have some.
Endemic birds are the reason many guests book Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages in the first place. Sinharaja is the single best place in the country to find them.
Yala, Udawalawe or Wilpattu — Choosing Parks for Your Sri Lanka Wildlife Tour Itinerary
Guests ask us which park to choose more than any other question, so here is the decision every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages itinerary comes down to.
| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your best chance of a leopard | Yala Block 1 or Block 5 | Highest density, most experienced trackers |
| Elephants in any month | Udawalawe | Open grassland, resident herds, short drives |
| The elephant gathering | Minneriya or Kaudulla | July to October only, afternoon drives best |
| To avoid other jeeps | Wilpattu | Largest park, quietest tracks in the country |
| Birds, waders and flamingos | Bundala, Kumana, Sinharaja | Migrants November–March, endemics year-round |
| A short safari with children | Udawalawe | Three-hour drives, plenty of elephants |
| Photography without crowds | Wilpattu, Yala Block 5 | Dawn light, very few vehicles |
Distances decide Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages routes more than preferences do. Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, sits roughly two and a half hours from Ella and two hours from Mirissa. Udawalawe is about two and a half hours from Ella and three from the south coast. Wilpattu is thirty kilometres from Anuradhapura and four hours from the airport.
Half-day or full-day is the next question. A half-day jeep runs about five hours, at dawn or from two in the afternoon. A full day buys you the quiet middle hours and a second chance at a sighting, for roughly double the jeep cost.
In our experience a full day is worth it once, at Yala, and unnecessary at Udawalawe. Built on two or three parks instead of five, your Sri Lanka wildlife tour itinerary simply works better. Sightings go up, driving hours go down, and your Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages cost less.
Yala’s gates open around six in the morning, and the front of the queue at 5:45am is full of jeeps that left Tissa at five. We book the permit and the jeep together so you are not the group that arrives at seven. If you are coming from the hills first, our Ella tour package and Nuwara Eliya tea plantation tour slot in front of the safari days perfectly.
Sri Lanka Elephant Safari — The Gathering, the Transit Home and the Ethics
If elephants are the reason you are coming, one Sri Lanka elephant safari will not be enough. The island holds several thousand wild elephants, and they behave completely differently depending on where you meet them. That is why the Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages we build for elephant lovers usually include two different parks.
The Gathering is the headline event. Between July and October, elephants move onto the drying beds of the Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs, sometimes three hundred or more at once. Peak viewing runs from late August to mid-September, and afternoon drives beat mornings.
Udawalawe is the year-round alternative inside most of our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages, with open grassland and elephants habituated to vehicles without ever being fed. It is the park we recommend for families, and the one where a first safari rarely disappoints.
The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves before releasing them back into the wild. Calves are fed four times a day and visitors watch from behind a fence, with entry around five dollars. That strict no-contact rule is precisely why we support it with every Sri Lanka elephant safari we plan.
What you will never find inside our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages is elephant riding, or a “sanctuary” that keeps animals chained for photos. Sri Lanka’s captive elephant industry faces real scrutiny, and we would rather lose a booking than add to the problem.
Culturally, elephants are revered here. A tusker carrying the sacred casket in Kandy’s Esala Perahera is treated like royalty. If your dates land on the festival, our Kandy tour packages can include Perahera viewing. It is one more reason our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages stay focused on wild elephants rather than captive ones.
Sri Lanka Wildlife Tour Itinerary — 5, 7 and 12 Day Templates That Flow
A wildlife route is a geography problem before it becomes an animal problem. Sri Lanka’s reserves sit in three clusters. The south holds Yala, Udawalawe and Bundala, the cultural triangle holds Minneriya, Kaudulla and Wilpattu, and the hill country holds Sinharaja and Horton Plains.
Any sane Sri Lanka wildlife tour itinerary moves between those clusters in one direction. The table below shows the three shapes we build most often, with land-only costs per person for two sharing.
| Nights | Parks included | Route shape | Land-only, per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 nights | Udawalawe + Yala | Airport → Udawalawe → Tissa → south coast → Colombo | from $510 |
| 7 nights | Udawalawe + Yala + Minneriya | Airport → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Tissa → Mirissa → Colombo | from $680 |
| 12 nights | Adds Wilpattu + Sinharaja | Airport → Wilpattu → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Tissa → Galle → Colombo | from $1,105 |
The seven-night shape is the one we build most, and here is how a Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages week runs on the ground.
- Day 1: land at Bandaranaike, drive to Sigiriya in about three and a half hours
- Day 2: sunrise climb, then Minneriya or Kaudulla in the afternoon
- Day 3: Kandy, temple and lake
- Day 4: scenic train to Ella
- Day 5: drive to Tissamaharama and rest
- Day 6: full-day Yala safari
- Day 7: second morning safari, then Mirissa or Galle for the coast
Notice what is missing. No backtracking to Colombo, no wasted half-days, and no park visited twice, which is what separates good Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages from a list of hotel names. Our Sri Lanka 7 day itinerary covers the non-wildlife version, and our Yala and Minneriya safari guide explains why those two parks pair so well.
Drought years complicate September and early October. Blocks 1 and 2 at Yala closed on 14 September 2026 and reopened on 15 October, so we rerouted guests to Block 5, Lunugamvehera and Udawalawe in that window. A flexible Sri Lanka wildlife tour itinerary beats a fixed one every time, and every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages route we sell keeps a weather plan B.
What Sri Lanka Wildlife Tour Packages Cost — Real 2026 Park Fees and Jeep Rates
Park prices inside Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages are never one number. Every safari has four moving parts. There is the per-person entry fee, a per-vehicle service charge of about eight to ten dollars, a vehicle permit of Rs. 150–500, and 18% VAT. Jeep hire is separate again.
| Park | Entry, foreign adult | Typical all-in per person | Jeep hire to budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yala | ~$25 base | ~$45 (2 adults sharing) | Rs. 7,000–8,000 half day, Rs. 14,000–17,000 full day, per jeep |
| Udawalawe | ~$15 | ~$27 | Rs. 5,000–6,500 half day |
| Minneriya / Kaudulla | ~$25 | ~$35 | Rs. 6,000–7,500 afternoon |
| Wilpattu | ~$15–25 | ~$25–35 | Full day only; long internal drives |
| Bundala | ~$12 | ~$20 | Rs. 5,000–6,000 half day |
| Kumana | ~$25 | ~$65 | Surcharges apply for long pickups |
| Sinharaja | ~$15 | Included tracker | No jeep required; walking trails |
The DWC revised several park fees at the start of 2026. Published roundups for the main parks now sit between $25 and $40 for a foreign adult, depending on category and gate. The all-in figures above reflect what our own guests paid this year, once service charge, permit and VAT were added for two adults sharing one jeep.
We quote the live rate in writing before you pay, and we never mark park fees up. Tickets are issued in your name, which is worth knowing when the queue at the gate is forty jeeps long. Every Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages quote we send shows park fees as a separate line, never bundled into a daily rate. The government’s official e-ticketing portal lists the categories and prices.
Then there is the rest of the trip. Our land-only Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages rates for two people sharing include the vehicle, driver-guide, hotels with breakfast, and every park fee and safari jeep.
| Trip length | Budget, 3-star AC | Comfort, 4-star boutique | Premium, 5-star or safari camp |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 nights / 6 days | $510–660 | $780–1,080 | $1,440–2,520 |
| 7 nights / 8 days | $680–880 | $1,040–1,440 | $1,920–3,360 |
| 12 nights / 13 days | $1,105–1,430 | $1,690–2,340 | $3,120–5,460 |
Per person, per day, that works out at roughly $85–110 on budget, $130–180 on comfort and $240–420 on premium. Solo travellers pay a single supplement of about $25–60 a night, depending on the hotel.
Peak surcharges bite in two windows. The first is 20 December to 10 January, when Sri Lankan resorts charge their highest seasonal rates. The second is the August–September elephant gathering, when Habarana and Sigiriya fill up. Book three months ahead for either.
What makes a wildlife trip cheaper? Travelling in early December or late January, choosing Udawalawe over a second Yala safari, and using one base for two nights instead of moving daily. Rooms and vehicles both cost less when you stop repacking.
If you want the numbers rebuilt around a different budget, our custom Sri Lanka tour itinerary service does exactly that. It is the fastest way to see how far your money stretches on Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages.

Hotel examples in each band, so you can judge what “4-star” actually means in a park town.
| Base | Budget band | Comfort band | Premium band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tissamaharama / Yala | Chaarya Resort & Spa | Ekho Safari Tissa | Cinnamon Wild Yala, Jetwing Yala |
| Udawalawe | Local safari lodges | Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort | Centauria Wild, Kalu’s Hideaway |
| Sigiriya / Habarana | Sigiriya Jungles | Cinnamon Lodge Habarana | Heritance Kandalama |
| Wilpattu | Wilpattu Tree House | Wilpattu Corridor Leisure | Thamaravila Wilpattu, Leopard Trails Wilpattu |

Availability decides in the end, as it does with all Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages in peak season. Park towns have only a handful of good hotels, and in the August gathering they sell out months ahead. We hold rooms at the quoted rate once you confirm, and we tell you honestly when a hotel is full rather than moving you somewhere worse at the same price. That honesty matters more than a discount, because a trip lives or dies on the hotel you actually sleep in.
Sri Lanka Safari Tour Packages for Special Interests
Wildlife travellers are not one audience, which is why our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages run on four specialist tracks. Our Sri Lanka safari tour packages are shaped around them, because the right plan for a birdwatcher is not the right plan for a photographer.
Photography Sri Lanka Safari Tour Packages
Photography-friendly Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages are built around the middle of the day rather than the dawn rush. Fewer vehicles, better light on a leopard lying in shade, and time to stay with a subject. We book a private full-day jeep with a driver who understands beanbags and long lenses.
Wilpattu and Yala’s Block 5 are our two recommendations. Both let a vehicle sit still without a queue forming behind it, which is the whole game.
Birding Add-Ons
Roughly 26 bird species are endemic to Sri Lanka, and Sinharaja holds about twenty of them, which is why so many Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages include one rainforest morning. Bundala and Kumana add migrants between November and March, while Kitulgala and the Kandy hills cover the low-country endemics.
A serious birding week is a different animal: early starts, long walks, a field guide, and far less driving than a big-game route. Tell us in advance and we build the Sri Lanka safari tour packages around trails rather than tracks.
Marine Wildlife
Whale watching runs on two coastlines. Mirissa works from November to April for blue whales and dolphins, and Trincomalee opens its own window from March to August. Our whale watching Mirissa tour covers the south-coast version, and we only book boats that keep the legal approach distance.
Turtles nest along the south-west coast at Kosgoda and Polhena, and the hatcheries we visit release hatchlings rather than keeping them. If you want that folded into a family trip, our Sri Lanka family holiday packages build it into the beach days.
Family Wildlife Trips
Children remember elephants and jeeps far more than temples. A family route works best as two short safaris, one long beach stay, and no drive longer than three hours. Those two safaris are the part of Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages that children actually talk about afterwards.
Best Time for a Wildlife Safari in Sri Lanka — Month by Month
Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, and they split the island diagonally, which is the single fact that shapes Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages more than any other. The south-west coast and hill country are wettest from May to September, while the north and east are wettest from November to February. Wildlife follows the dry side, which is why the season changes park by park.
| Park | Best months | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yala | February–July | Late September to mid-October | Drought closure risk for Blocks 1 and 2 |
| Udawalawe | December–May, good year-round | — | Open grassland and resident herds |
| Minneriya / Kaudulla | July–October, peak August–September | June and November | The Gathering needs low water |
| Wilpattu | February–September | November–December | Long drives, best when tracks dry |
| Bundala | November–March | May–August | Migratory birds and flamingos arrive |
| Kumana | April–September | November–December | East-coast dry season |
| Sinharaja | December–April | June–August | Drier trails, fewer leeches |
| Horton Plains | January–March | June–August | Clear World’s End views before 9am |
If leopards are your only goal, book Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages between February and July. Water is scarce, animals concentrate near the remaining pools, and morning drives deliver. September is the weakest month at Yala because of the drought closure, although Block 5 stays open.
If elephants are the priority, plan August or early September for the Gathering. Book hotels by May, because Habarana, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa fill with Europeans escaping their own summer. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority publishes monthly arrival figures, and they show exactly the same pattern.
Crowd behaviour matters as much as weather. Sri Lankan school holidays, the European winter and the December festive season all push jeep numbers up at Yala. A Tuesday morning in March is a completely different park from a Sunday in August. We plan Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages around that difference rather than against it.
In our experience the shoulder weeks are the sweet spot: the last ten days of January, or late April before the inter-monsoon rains. Parks are just as good, hotels are cheaper, and your Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages go further for the same money. Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide covers the wider weather picture, while this page stays with wildlife.
Wildlife Safari in Sri Lanka — Practical Tips, Rules and Common Mistakes
A wildlife safari in Sri Lanka is a regulated activity, and the rules exist for good reason. Park regulations prohibit leaving the vehicle except at designated points, feeding animals, playing music, littering, and flying drones without written permission.
We brief every guest on those rules before the first safari, and our drivers enforce them inside the park. Dress for dust and sun rather than for photographs. Muted greens, browns and khaki blend into the bush, while white and neon scare animals and ruin your own pictures. Closed shoes, a wide-brimmed hat and insect repellent are essential in the dry zone.
Pack binoculars, and 8×42 is the sweet spot for a jeep. Photographers should carry a 300mm or longer lens, spare batteries, and a dust bag or plastic cover, because Yala dust gets into everything.
Book the jeep and the permit together, in advance, because it is the step most people forget when they arrange Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages themselves. Yala limits how many jeeps may enter per session, so morning slots go first in peak weeks. Never buy a “safari” from a beach tout in Mirissa or Negombo.
Tipping guidance: Rs. 1,500–2,500 a day for a driver-guide, Rs. 500–1,000 for a jeep driver, and Rs. 500–1,000 for a park tracker who finds you something special. Cash only, and always in rupees.
On expectations, we stay deliberately honest. On a half-day Yala safari in a good month, roughly one in three of our groups gets a clear leopard sighting. Add a second morning or a full day and that comfortably passes half. Nobody on earth can promise you a leopard.
The mistakes we see most often on badly planned Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages are all avoidable.
- Booking a single half-day safari and expecting a leopard
- Joining a shared jeep with eight strangers and three cameras pressed against your shoulder
- Safari-ing at midday in September, when it is 34°C and the animals are asleep in shade
- Visiting only Yala, then discovering that Wilpattu or Udawalawe would have suited them better
- Riding an elephant, or paying an “orphanage” that keeps animals for photographs
- Forgetting that park fees and jeep hire sit outside the headline tour price
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages cost?
Land-only and for two people sharing, our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages start around $510 each for five budget nights. A seven-night comfort plan runs to roughly $680 per person. Park fees, jeep hire, hotels with breakfast and a private car are included. Flights, insurance and tips are not.
What is the best time to visit Yala National Park?
February to July, which is when we schedule most Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages with Yala as the centrepiece. Water is scarce, animals concentrate at the remaining pools, and leopard sightings peak. Avoid late September and early October, when the DWC closes Yala’s Blocks 1 and 2 for drought recovery, as it did from 14 September to 15 October 2026.
Which park is best for a Sri Lanka elephant safari?
Udawalawe for dependable sightings in any month, and Minneriya or Kaudulla between July and October for the Gathering. Udawalawe sits at the heart of most family Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages we design. Udawalawe is also the friendliest park for children and for anyone on a short trip.
How many days do you need for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka?
Five nights covers two parks properly. Seven nights is the sweet spot: three parks, hill country and beach time. That is why seven nights sits in the middle of our Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages range. Twelve nights adds Wilpattu, Sinharaja and the east coast without ever feeling rushed.
Is Yala National Park closed in September and October 2026?
Partially, and we reroute Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages around it every year. Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought, while Blocks 3, 5 and 6 stayed open. Safaris continued through Block 5 and Lunugamvehera, so a September trip is still a real safari trip.
Can you see leopards and blue whales on the same trip?
Yes, in the right season. Yala is two and a half hours from Mirissa, where blue whales pass between November and April. From March to August, pair the east coast with Trincomalee instead.
Are Sri Lanka safari tour packages suitable for children?
Very. Udawalawe’s short drives and the Elephant Transit Home feeding sessions are the best introduction, and we keep daily drives under three hours for families with young children.
Do I need to book safari jeeps and park tickets in advance?
Yes in peak season, and January to March and August sell out first. Advance booking is what separates comfortable Sri Lanka wildlife tour packages from a rushed one. We book the jeep and the permit together in your name, then confirm the session time before you pay a deposit.
